A Republican attorney will run next year against U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, an eight-term Democratic incumbent, in the 13th Congressional District race next year.
Chris DePizzo, a 2005 Cardinal Mooney High School graduate, moved two months ago from New York City to Boardman. He is in the process of purchasing a house in Cuyahoga Falls. His family is originally from Youngstown.
“I want to run in order to serve the constituents of the district as fully as I can and have my votes reflect their beliefs,” DePizzo said.
DePizzo is leaving his law practice to devote all his time to the congressional race. This is his first time running for political office.
DePizzo recently created a campaign committee, according to Federal Election Commission records, with a mailing address of 8381 Market St. in Boardman, the Mahoning County Republican Party’s headquarters.
“I’m very excited about Chris’ candidacy,” said Mark Munroe, Mahoning County GOP chairman. “He contacted me a few months back about running for Congress. Tim Ryan has had numerous challengers over the years, but it’s difficult to say he’s had serious challengers. I’m very impressed with Chris.”
The five-county 13th District includes most of Mahoning and Trumbull counties. It also includes parts of Summit, Portage and Stark counties.
Ryan, of Howland, had $327,320 in his campaign fund as of Sept. 30.
The National Republican Congressional Committee, the GOP House’s main campaign and fundraising group, listed Ryan’s district among 36 held by Democrats as targets earlier this year.
